Nature of Work

The messenger is responsible for pick-up, delivery, and processing of mail, packages, records, or materials within the judiciary's facilities and other public and private entities. Work involves the operation of a motor vehicle as well as minor clerical work. Supervision is received from the Assistant Administrator of Courts or designee, who reviews work for compliance to guidelines.

Essential Functions (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)

         Operates and maintains postal meter.

         Makes rounds of mail stations in assigned areas; picks up mail packages and records for delivery; organizes, sorts, stamps and seals mail for postal delivery or interoffice delivery; and deposits mail to designated areas and the post office as required.

         Maintains control logs for registered and express packages for tracking and reconciliation purposes.

         Assists personnel in preparing packages for delivery and/or mailing via post office or other mail courier.

         Operates passenger vehicle in a safe and courteous manner, making deliveries to and from other court offices and/or entities.

         Maintains vehicle in a safe and clean condition.

         Serves as a member of the judiciary's Emergency Response Team.

         Transports court personnel, as necessary.

         Other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

         Knowledge of local traffic regulations.

         General knowledge of the locality in which work is performed.

         Ability to learn departmental messenger routes and schedules.

         Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

         Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations and to write legibly.

         Ability to learn how to operate a postage meter and computer.

         Ability to operate an automobile safely and efficiently in traffic.

         Ability to learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to a prescribed routine.

         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Working Conditions

The work is performed in an office environment and involves exposure to moderate noise and may be subjected to outdoor weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, and reaching with hands and arms; must be able to transfer up to 75 pounds; must be able to climb stairs repeatedly with heavy loads. Must be able to deal with traffic and a variety of road conditions while using a passenger vehicle.

Licensure and Certification

Possession of a current driver's license with no infractions, valid in the U.S. Virgin Islands is required.
